“You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” – Maya Angelou
Hi! Welcome to my blog! I’m Jen, the “Girl on Fire”.
I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2016, following months of intense pain and fatigue that started soon after the birth of my beautiful daughter earlier that year. I had led a high-functioning life prior to that, previously working as a social worker, before taking time out to undertake further studies. I married my long-term boyfriend in 2014 and was excited for our future to come. The effects of fibromyalgia changed so many aspects of my life. It has been a tough road to get to where I am today, with many obstacles and stumbles along the way.
So….why did I choose the name, “The Girl on Fire?” The symptoms of fibromyalgia are numerous and varied, but one of the common symptoms of fibromyalgia is neuropathic (nerve) pain. It is one of my most debilitating symptoms, which I experience as a burning pain across my skin. Hence, “The Girl on Fire.”
I started this blog as a way of sharing my own journey of fibromyalgia, in the hopes of creating awareness and empathy for the wider fibro community and as way of sharing information about the condition itself for sufferers, their friends and family alike. (Just remember though, that I do not have a medical background. The information I am sharing is from my own journey, including therapies that may/may not have worked for me. It is therefore important that you speak to your own trusted health professionals before undertaking any and all treatments and therapies mentioned in this site!)
I hope that over time, this site will also grow to offer a safe space to post about other people’s experiences with fibromyalgia, to emphasise how diverse our individual journey’s really are.
Thanks for reading!
xx Jen – The Girl on Fire
